Lené Levy-Storms, PhD
Departments of Social Welfare and Medicine/Geriatrics at UCLA Lené Levy-Storms received her B.S. degree in psychology from UC Davis, a MPH in biostatistics and PhD in public health. From 1998-2000, she was an assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Gerontology and a fellow of the Sealy Center on Aging at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. In 2000, she joined the UCLA Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics as an assistant professor. At that time, she also became an associate director of the UCLA/Borun Center for Gerontological Research, an appointment which she continues to hold. The Borun Center is based at the Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda, CA and focuses on applied research to improve the quality of life of older adults in long-term care settings. |
Fernando Torres-Gil, PhD
Professor of Social Welfare and Public Policy at UCLA Director of the UCLA Center for Policy Research on Aging Fernando M. Torres-Gil’s multifaceted career spans the academic, professional, and policy arenas. He is a Professor of Social Welfare and Public Policy at UCLA, an Adjunct Professor of Gerontology at USC, and Director of the UCLA Center for Policy Research on Aging. He has served as Associate Dean and Acting Dean at the UCLA School of Public Affairs, and most recently Chair of the Social Welfare Department. He has written six books and over l00 publications, including The New Aging: Politics and Change in America (1992) and Lessons from Three Nations, Volumes I and II (2007). His academic contributions have earned him membership in the prestigious Academies of Public Administration, Gerontology and Social Insurance. His research spans important topics of health and long-term care, disability, entitlement reform, and the politics of aging. |
Meloney Morse
Regional Programs Director EngAGE; The Art of Active Aging I have been working with EngAGE since 2004, starting as an Exercise/ Balance Instructor for Seniors. Currently I oversee all 36 southern California properties, as well as our northern California and out of state projects in Portland Oregon, Minnesota, and North Carolina. We have expanded our services beyond seniors, to families and special needs populations. My work has evolved from teaching classes and organizing on site events, to administration oversight, staff management, and policy and procedure development. It is the teamwork of this organization and our collaborators, from volunteers to partnerships, that help to build our communities into vibrant centers of learning and creativity, across generations. |
Nancy Goodhart
CAO, Chief Administration Office EngAGE; The Art of Active Aging I have been working with EngAGE since 2006, starting as a volunteer/ fitness and aqua fitness instructor. Today, I currently program and oversee four properties in the Orange County region. I implement and provide programming in the areas of wellness, creativity, exercise and learning. Some of my responsibilities also include interviewing and hiring independent contractors, reviewing resident assessment of classes and tailoring programming to meet resident’s needs. I also host parties and special events such as community potlucks, art shows and guest speaker presentations. My work here at EngAGE over the years has been a very rewarding and personally fulfilling experience. I am grateful to have a team of support behind me as we continue to empower and help our seniors actively age. |
Asa Hatami, PhD
Postdoctoral Scholar & Fellow Dr. Hatami has over 9 years of experience in neurodegenerative research. After completing his undergraduate studies in Neuroscience at UCLA, he earned his Ph.D. under the mentorship of Dr. Charlie Glabe at UC Irvine, where he investigated amyloid aggregation and structural diversity using amyloid conformation-dependent monoclonal antibodies, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease. Upon graduating from UC Irvine, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Marie-Francoise Chesselet at UCLA, where he investigated potential therapeutic strategies for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and traumatic brain injury in preclinical rodent models. As a member of the Drug Discovery Laboratory, he will focus on screening compounds to identify molecules with therapeutic potential in the treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. He will also investigate the potential for brain-derived exosomes to be used as biomarkers for a wide range of neurologic disorders, including multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. |
Scott Kaiser, MD
Chief Innovation Officer at Motion Picture & Television Fund "MPTF Focus on Population Health and Well-Being: Pathways to Engagement" Scott Kaiser is a practicing geriatrician and Chief Innovation Officer at the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF), which provides services, support and assistance to the entertainment industry community. He is an advocate for the improvement of aging services and geriatric care with a focus on better health and well-being through a community-oriented approach to the care of older adults. |
Monica R. Moore, MSG
Community Health Program Manager Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research at UCLA Monica Moore has worked in the field of aging and Alzheimer's Disease for more than 15 years focusing on community education and outreach and caregiver support. She has worked for the Alzheimer's Association - California Southland Chapter, WISE and Healthy Aging, and is now proud to be at the Easton Center. She holds a Masters Degree in Gerontology from California State University Long Beach and a certificate in Gerontology from Sonoma State University. |
LaVada Deel
MSW at Roze Room Hospice Medical social worker with experience and training in clinical social work, case management, hospice and palliative care. Have experience with diverse populations in individual and group therapy; focused in youth and geriatrics. Coordinated group for teens and co-facilitated organization of volunteer program for 50+ individuals. Awarded stipend for GSWEC training. Planned and executed events for charity functions, facilitated all personnel actions, staffing, training and mentoring. Proficient in policies and procedures, problem solving and leadership. |

Terry Magady, J.D.
Terry Magady is one of only seven attorneys in Los Angeles County certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation. He is also one of only 75 attorneys nationwide selected as a member of the prestigious Council of Advanced Practitioners, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys' designation for the most highly regarded elder law attorneys in the country. He received a Master of Pubic Administration degree from Princeton University and a Juris Doctor Degree from University of Southern California. |
Arielle Burstein
Arielle Burstein is a senior associate with the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging. She joins the institute after several years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab, a multidisciplinary research program, where she translated demographic change into innovative social research on aging. Her work has helped to create industry wide changes to improve aging in healthcare, financial services, retail, technology and pharmaceuticals and other industries.At the Center, Burstein continues to explore the opportunities the aging of the global population presents, with a focus on challenging conventional wisdom through stakeholder engagement, communications and helping shape the Institute's research efforts. Burstein works with Center leadership and advisors to convene experts in health, business, policy, philanthropy, and education to drive conversation and collaboration, promote thought leadership, and foster innovative ideas and action. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Hispanic Studies from Wheaton College. Burstein works at the Institute's Santa Monica office. |
Kathleen Coatta, M.S.W.
Kathleen Coatta has recently completed her Master of Social Work at California State University, Los Angeles. She has previous experience as a grant writer and fundraiser with Catholic Charities of Los Angeles where she helped secure program funding through foundations, corporations, and government entities. Previously, Kathleen worked as a public relations representative for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and a graphic design account executive. Most recently, as an intern therapist at All Peoples Christian Center in South Central Los Angeles, she learned firsthand about the needs and aspirations of minority, disenfranchised youth. Kathleen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Michigan. |
Helen Lavretsky, M.D.
Helen Lavretsky, MD, is a Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and the Semel Scholar in Integrative Mental Health. She directs a research program in Late-life depression, stress, and wellness program at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. Dr. Lavretsky is a recipient of the career development and other research awards from National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), and other research grants. Her current research interest is in developing biomarkers of treatment response in geriatric depression with mild cognitive impairment, as well as developing mind-body approaches to treatment and prevention of mood and cognitive disorders in older adults using medications, memory training, exercise, Tai-Chi, yoga and meditation. After receiving her Medical Degree from the Moscow Medical Institute, Dr. Lavretsky performed her residency in Psychiatry at UCLA-San Fernando Valley Residency Program, followed by the UCLA Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry, and the national VA Research Fellowship in Neurosciences. She received her Degree of Master of Science in Clinical Research from UCLA in 2004. She is Board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with added Geriatric Qualifications, and by the American Board of Holistic and Integrative Medicine. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. |
Varghese John, Ph.D
Professor Varghese John is a pharmaceutical industry veteran and a Drug discovery specialist, with over 20 years of experience leading drug development projects. His research has resulted in several key publications and patents in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other CNS disorders and led to several clinical candidates. Professor John recently joined the Department of Neurology and his lab is focused in discovery and development of new therapeutics for diseases with great need such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS and Multiple Sclerosis. |

Careers in Aging Week: Panel and Networking Events

Want to network with professionals? Maybe you want to explore growing careers in a field helping a community that's not always given the spotlight? Everyone ages, but do you know about all the different issues the aging population faces? If any of these questions sound appealing, come out to our "Careers in Aging Week" events on Thursday, April 9 for networking and career exploration! Our panel event from 12:30-2pm in Public Affairs 2343 will host a multidisciplinary panel of professionals speaking about future opportunities in the aging field. Our networking event from 5-7pm in Public Affairs 3383 will allow you to make more casual conversation with professionals from fields ranging from social welfare, policy, public health, medicine, urban planning, and law. GIG Journal Club / Discussion Group January 20th starting at 2pm
Come out to our first Journal Club meeting to discuss current events/issues and review relevant articles regarding gerontology! We hope to update each other on current research to stay aware of new knowledge, emerging resources, and to critically evaluate contemporary events. The Gerontology & Geriatrics Interest Group (GIG) would like to welcome you to our first presentation of the Winter quarter. Ms. Rachel M. Price, MSG, Executive Director of the California Council on Gerontology & Geriatrics (CCGG) will give us an insiders perspective on the current and future issues and goals for geriatric education, advocacy and workforce development in California. As an introduction to Ms. Price, as Executive DIrector she oversees the association finances, grant development and management, and planning and policy. In addition, Ms. Price has worked at the California Geriatric Education Center at UCLA for the last eight years as the Deputy Director offering geriatric training programs for health professionals, faculty and students across California. Ms. Price is also the Program Manager of the U.S. Department of Education FIPSE grant that developed the Skills for Healthy Aging Resources & Programs (SHARP) Gerontology Certificate at two community colleges in California. She also holds a Master’s of Science in Gerontology from California State University, Long Beach and is professionally active in the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. This fun walk in the park is held by the Alzheimer's Association and serves as a fundraiser for advancements in research and treatment in the fight against Alzheimer's.
